International Folklore Festival Skamba Skamba Kankliai

27th-30th May, 2010

This festival was first organized because for many culture characters, Vilnius needed an instrumental folk music. It is the oldest folklore festival in Vilnius, Lithuania. So it was first held in 1973 in halls of Vilnius and Park of Mountains with the name of “Skamba, Skamba, Kankliai”, included various songs and dances.

Since then, a traditional culture of the festival has been developed.  The festival became a mean for restore the faith of the citizens in their country during the resistance against Soviets.  In 1979, the festival spread to the University of Vilnius, where students enjoyed music and dance together, but also spread to concert halls. Every year, new venues were added for the festival, spreading to the whole city, during a full week.

Nowadays this festival it is more modern but still keeps its roots with traditional folklore. This year the festival will be held from May 27.  Do not miss this event and discover the culture of Vilnius with a lot of activities, concerts, shows, and much more, aiming at promoting and preserving the culture of Lithuania.
